Is your home a mess? Well, don’t be distressed!

Ah, home sweet home! With the Covid-19 pandemic making working from home and hybrid working models the norm, the home has become a place where many of us spend most of our time now. But staying at home has also come with its own set of challenges. While housing costs are rapidly shooting up around the world, home spaces, especially in urban areas, seem to be shrinking. The cost-to-space ratio in major metropolises like Hong Kong, New York, Mumbai, Seoul, London, etc. has been the butt of much satirical comedy on the internet. As it stands, those making their homes a home base are trying to find ways to make space for themselves in their homes.

We’re here to help with a list of space-saving gadgets to better organize and make the most of what you’re working with!

1. Hanging shelves

Hanging shelves can be a really convenient way to combat the lack of shelf space in a variety of places,

be it wardrobes, bathrooms, bedrooms, studies, etc. The shelves can be hung from a hanging rod in your closet, the bar for your shower curtain, curtain rods or simply some rope taped to the wall.

They come in various shapes, sizes and materials to cater to everyone’s needs. They’re also easy to store, as they’re designed to flatten by collapsing onto themselves when not in use. You can use hanging shelves to store toiletries linens, towels, toys etc. and create additional space for clothes in your wardrobe.

2. Turn tables for cabinets

How often have you had to pull everything out of a kitchen cabinet to get something you’ve stashed at the very back, in your attempt to make the most of the space you have? We’re guessing plenty because we’ve also been there and done that. A simple solution to this is a small turn table.

A turn table in the cabinet can make it easier to access almost everything in the space by simply rotating the turn table to reach what you need. Not only does it help one effectively manage one’s space, but it also saves you the hassle of rearranging everything back into the shelf after obtaining what you need.

This also has some great DIY potential, as you could simply take a large circular dish like a thrifted pie tin, add a few marbles and place a smaller circular dish on top of the marbles for a similar effect.

3. Packing cube

Packing cubes are a solution to a lot of the “where on earth do I put this?!” problems you may be facing.

Some might be familiar with the concept of packing cubes in luggage, but they can easily be adapted to suit a variety of storage needs around the house.

Not enough shelves for your clothes? Packing cubes. Want to put heavy winter clothing in for the summer? Packing cubes. Kids have too many toys that never seem to be in one place? Packing cubes! Our point is, they’re versatile and can come in various sizes, colors and degrees of transparency to suit your needs.

They make an excellent organizing tool; all you need to do is pull out the required cube (from a shelf, from under a bed or on top of the cupboard) and simply take out what you need without having to disturb anything else around your tightly packed space. They’re usually made of durable canvas or plastic and can be stacked on top of each other for maximum space optimization.

4. Cascading hangers

If you’re someone fond of clothes, closet space in most big cities is probably your arch-nemesis. For those whose shelf space resembles a pigeonhole or whose hanging space looks like a broom cabinet, you might need some assistance. Enter cascading hangers.

They can do a lot of powerlifting to make sure you get the most out of the hanging space you have. These hangers can hold multiple regular clothing hangers simultaneously and cascade them to take up space vertically instead of horizontally. It can efficiently maximize hanging space by not crowding the bar. It can also help dry multiple items on the clothing line after a hefty laundry day.  They’re easily available at most department stores and various e-retail platforms at very affordable prices.

5. Sliding Drawers

Sometimes you could have a space that is amazing in every way but would be a whole lot better with just a little bit more storage. You may be an expert at fridge Tetris, but small sliding drawers that can easily accommodate eggs, fruits or the odd bits of candy, can surely offer some much-needed respite for your abilities.

Sliding drawers can be clipped under flat surfaces, like fridge shelves, cabinets, the sides of a desk, a kitchen countertop etc. The flat surface can effectively act like the lid of the drawers. These drawers come in a few different sizes and materials, like perforated plastic and silicone, and can be useful in keeping a space more organized and neat.

We hope this list of items can help you in your journey of transforming your living space from crowded and congested to comfortable and cozy!
